A tracheostomy is a special surgery that helps people who have trouble breathing. The doctor makes a small opening in the neck and puts a tube into the windpipe (called the trachea). This tube helps air go in and out of the lungs. Sometimes this is done quickly in an emergency, and other times it’s planned for people who need help breathing for a long time.
